Random Question Friday

To help stimulate conversation (and for something to do while you’re waiting for your weekend to begin…), I launched “Random Question Friday” a couple of weeks ago. I totally failed last week, totally forgetting to post anything though. Oops! So, this week there’s 2 questions… to make up for it. Feel free to answer one or both.

What was one of your favorite songs growing up?

What was one of your favorite songs now?

– – – – – –

Me: Without a doubt it, my favorite song growing up was George Harrison’s “Got My Mind My On You.” I was probably 4 years old but can still remember it vividly. Seriously. My brothers were both in bowling leagues and I remember sitting with my mom, watching my brothers bowl, kicking back with a hot chocolate and donut and just dancing and singing along to this song as it played overhead.

My favorite song now I’m going to have to pick by artist as opposed to choosing one of out the sky. I’ve really come to love Brad Paisley in recent years. In particular, my favorite song of his is “She’s Everything…” – such a beautiful tribute to his wife.

Side note: I feel it is necessary to say that, “Alive & Running” (Kristian Stanfill) is my favorite worship song right now.

  1. I loved that song too. Although I wasn't 4. Anything by the Beatles or one of them…was played in our house a lot.

Then would probably be Prince. Now would def. be Prince. I listen to him at least once a day.

  2. One of my favorites while growing up was Losing My Religion by R.E.M. My friend and I used to dim the lights, blare that song, and do an interpretive dance to it…I still love that song, actually.

And now? Can't pick just one, but I will say that I have been listening to Rufus Wainwright's Hallelujah A LOT lately.

It's a fantastic piece of music.

  3. It depends how far back you want to go. :-) If we're talking really young, probably Ralph McTell singing Streets of London http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDT1sx1yePM (one of the less embarrassing ones I COULD say. I've a whole back catalogue of trash I loved as a kid…) I still have a Ralph CD.

If we're talking 10/11. then Nik Kershaw with I Won't Let the Sun Go Down on Me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNgPYXJvqWM – oh how I loved this guy!

13+ (probably to present day…LOL), it has to be A-ha – Hunting High and Low http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwSL_eTYScs . Morten, Morten, Morten and his impossibly sharp cheekbones and voice of an angel. Sigh. Did not do my hormonal teen years ANY good.

Nowadays (at my vastly increased age? :-) ) – I've mentioned it tons of times, but probably Elbow & One Day Like This http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hk2xaeXnxlM has completely rocked my world. It's a stormer of a song that makes me feel happy.

You've given me an idea for another music post on my blog…hmm…thanks Crystal!

Hey there machroi! Did you know that Mr. Cheekbones is still singing lead on his and THEIR 9th album? Foot of the Mountain was released in July all over Europe. "Foot" was even the theme song for the World Track and Field Championships in Berlin last month. Check out the album… it rocks!

BTW, Phil Collins, "In the Air Tonight" and a-ha's "The Sun Always Shines on TV" were probably still my young favorites. Chicago's "Stay The Night" and Rick Springfields "Affair of the Heart" were also awesome… Ahh.. the 80's.

  5. I loved "Got My Mind Set On You"! I was about six years old and I just thought it was the greatest. Funnily my parents got very sick of that song, but I didn't.

The first pop song I ever went out to buy was "Opposites Attract" by Paula Abdul. No matter what a boozy mess she is nowadays, I'll always have a soft spot for her because of that.

  6. I refuse to answer on the grounds that it may incriminate me as an "old lady"…however…I still listen (and sing) all the songs 'U younguns" are singing & dancing to today!! ;-)

Seriously? "Got my mind set on you" was when u were 4? I AM old!! But, never feeling it…or acting it!!

  7. Any questions about favourite songs are nigh on impossible for me to answer.

    However…

The song from my pre-teen years I hold closest to my heart is prorably "Don't Leave Me This Way" by The Communards. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mlpxOaQinE

    Prorably…

Though I want to say "You're The Voice" by John Farnham because as a 12 year old I got to sing with him on stage (with 9 other kids, as part of his backing choir). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99P7TTvpO1g Diane seems to think this is the unofficial Australian National anthem. We should just keep the current one and change the tune…like this… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocfiPS1CZ-s

And note I so deftly avoided the second question…
